My husband and I have been discussing the answer to our daughter's question and we just don't know the right answer.
I don't want to be overly protective and strict like my parents were but I also don't want to be too permissive.

As we all know, relationships and healthy dating take a lot of practice and trial and error. Televised media helped to promote this idea that kids are supposed to have boyfriend/girlfriends and are supposed to be dating. Naturally as kids view movies, shows, read books and all they will think that this is the "norm" and it is up to the parents to tell them that when in school, they have no business dating. Naturally, teenagers get more romantic feelings for people. Middle school and high school are the times where teens can experiment with relationships.
I didn't sneak around and date either because I didn't want to get into trouble with my parents.
